Monday Dec 13, 2021
Monday Dec 13, 2021
🎧 In this episode, Tanya talks about her greatest accomplishment - building up her own business servicing the dental equipment to the dental industry in all of the New South Wales area. Tanya says that her amazing team of 12 people help dentists become more profitable and more efficient by training them and making sure that they have the most up-to-date equipment.
As a mother of two beautiful boys, Tanya is very passionate about their careers and their happiness. She tries to encourage her boys to do what makes their hearts sing in the morning, and just encourages them to do whatever makes them happy in life.
She is also passionate about women in business. Tanya is Chair of the dental industry association, which encourages all women regardless of where they are in their careers, to lift them up, motivate them, train them, mentor them so that they can further their careers, and become leaders of the dental industry.
Tanya also says that she has realised as she has gotten older that it's fantastic to be different from everybody else, and for everyone else to be different from you.
She believes that every human body is unique, and every human body is different. That's why we're all put on this earth just to be different.
Tanya thinks that most women are very hard on themselves, so we should probably be a little bit more lenient with ourselves.
Tanya’s mantra to get yourself going is - Be proud, be strong, love yourself, look in the mirror and tell yourself how amazing you are every day.

INTERVIEW TRANSCRIPT (auto-generated) :Â
Hi, you are listening to My Body My Story podcast,
Be more mindful of being more well rounded as far as you know, not just worrying about your career, you know that it's very important to be, you know, have a healthy mind healthy body.
Â
This is the 45 or 45 chapter where we celebrate rule breakers and role models, the women who inspire us to live life our way and to show that sensuality, beauty, soul and true essence. Here we talk about what it's like to be 45 Plus, adjusting to the changes that come with time, and will listen to the stories of our participants. Â
Hi, Tanya, welcome to our studio, and welcome to our project. And while you sitting in the makeup chair, and Chitra is doing makeup for you. We are asking you a few questions.
Â
Tell us a bit about yourself.
Â
Thank you for having me. I'm 50 years old turned 50 in September this year, I am a mother of two beautiful boys Jack who is 22 and William who is 14. I currently own my own business. So our business is we sell dental equipment, we service the dental equipment to the dental industry. So we help dentists become more profitable and more efficient by training them and making sure that they have the most up to date equipment. I have a team amazing team of 12 people we are located in Miranda in Sydney, and we service all of the New South Wales area. Personally, I love to ski, I play netball. And I love to go to the gym, go for walks on the beach, and I try and meditate every day.
Â
So what are you most passionate about?
Â
The things I'm most passionate about women in business. So one of my other roles is I'm the chair of the dental industry association. We hold women in dentistry forum. So we encourage all women regardless of where they are in their careers, to lift them up, motivate them, train them, mentor them so that they can further their careers and become leaders of our industry.
Â
I'm also very passionate about my children, and their careers and their happiness. So I try and encourage my boys to do what makes them their heart sing in the morning. And just encourage them to do whatever makes them happy in life.
Â
So everyone, everyone knows that with age we change. But what positive changes have you experienced so far?
Â
I think as we get older, we tend to accept ourselves a little bit more than we do when we're younger. I think when we're young, we go 100 miles an hour and we wish our age away. We wish our lives away, I should say the things that I've accepted, I think is I've become more patient, I've become more conscious about being healthy, both mind body and spirit, and just accepting people for who they are rather than wanting people to change to suit your views. I've actually realised as I've gotten older that it's fantastic to be different from everybody else, and for everyone else to be different from you.
Â
And what is the biggest challenge you're experiencing at this age,
Â
I think accepting that our faces and our bodies don't look the same. When we look in the mirror. We tend to see the person that we were when we were in our 20s and 30s. And I think just being able to accept that your body is what it is your face is what it is, but your mind still is active and so is your soul.
Â
Can you describe your greatest accomplishment so far?
Â
I would say building up my business. I bought the business with my business partner 15 years ago. It was just he and I. And we've taken that business over the last 15 years to a multi million dollar business and we have a team of 12 it's a fun place to work. We've got a great team, whether it's admin finance, or the boys out in the field. And I'm really proud of what we've built.
Â
So why have you chosen this particular business?
Â
We looked at many different businesses and my background was corporate IT wasn't sort of a small business. And the business that we were in previously was service orientated. So we looked to buy a business that was service orientated, even though we didn't know Dental. And we learnt the dental along the way. Yeah, that's quite interesting niche. It is.
Â
So if you could go back in time and meet your 30 year old self, what advice would you give her?
Â
Oh, that's a very good question.
I would probably encourage her to be more mindful of being more well rounded, as far as you know, not just worrying about your career, you know, that it's very important to be, you know, have a healthy mind healthy body, I would probably also have encouraged my younger self, to have done her degree earlier, rather than doing a degree with an 18 month old baby. And probably just to explore different avenues, different industries, different people, and probably just to travel some more.
Â
Excellent. And what advice would you give you younger women who will eventually undergo this changes that reach this age? So before they do, what would you say to them?
Â
I'd say before you turn 50, love and accept who you are, everyone is different. Everyone is beautiful, from the inside and out. And it's not just the external aesthetics, that are the important things. It's also what kind of person you are what you give back, and just accept yourself for who you are.
Â
And you're talking about accepting for who you are. And we all know about the idea of perfect body image, which is on the way of accepting who you are. So where do you think this idea comes from?
Â
I think when we're younger, young girls look at magazines, and they look at these beautiful supermodels, they're all a size zero, that that's just the media telling us that's the way the perfect woman should look like for a man to want you. So I think and I, you know, I was exactly the same when I was younger, you always wanted to be thinner, you always wanted to be taller, you always wanted to have, you know, you look differently. And I still think even at 50, you still want to look good, you still want to feel good. But I think that every human body is unique, and every human body is different. And that's why we're all put on this earth just to be different.
Â
And what is it for you perfect body?
Â
For me, I think it is it is being healthy. So eating healthy, I still think that you should be able to exercise, try and exercise every day to keep that I think as you get older, you know, things start to ache in places that it didn't ache when you were 20 and 30.
And I also think that you know, you should try and maintain an eye you know, a reasonable body weight for your height and, and your size. And I think most women, regardless of what we say, we're very hard on ourselves, we try and you know, we pick on the things you know, after you have children, your belly is never the same. And you know, your hips are never the same. But I think we're quite harsh on ourselves. So we should probably be a little bit more lenient on ourselves. Yes.
Â
And what does it mean to you? Feeling good and looking good? What comes first?
Â
I think feeling good. Definitely I think mindset and how what attitude you wake up with in the morning makes a huge difference. If you feel good. And then you put something on that you know that you're comfortable in. Then you look in the mirror, you look good, I think you can still put some a beautiful gown on. And if you're not in in the right headspace for that, you won't feel beautiful, but I think if your mind is in the right place, and you put on something beautiful, it makes the world of difference.
Â
So what makes you feel the most beautiful?
Â
Oh, I don't know. That's a very, that's a difficult one. I'm very lucky that I have a partner that he rolls over every morning and says good morning. Beautiful. So I think that kind of helps definitely puts you in a good mind frame to start the day. And I also think if I go out on the weekend, somewhere to dinner or a party and I walk into the lounge room and say goodbye to my boys. That is one of them, you know says Oh mom, you look lovely. That always makes you feel beautiful.
Â
If you have any. What is your favourite quote about being a woman?
Â
Oh, I don't think I have any particular favourite quote about being a woman.
I would say that, you know, be proud, be strong. Love yourself, look in the mirror and tell yourself how amazing you are every day. So not necessarily a quote but more of a mantra to get yourself going.
Â
Thank you, Tanya, thank you very much for joining the project. I hope you will enjoy the rest of the day and your photoshoot. I'm loving it already.
